The beginning of DGS startup in Nairobi diocese.
Nairobi Diocese have an MOU with DGS. We met with Rev Kevin, Vicar of the Anglican
Church of the Good Shepherd and visited on Sun 30 August and after church met with the
Sunday School teachers and Readers over lunch. They are very excited about starting DGS
in the church, utilising the school classrooms of the primary school on the church campus.
Because of the number of early teens and the significant issues impacting young people in
the area, it was decided, to initially do Level 1 training followed by Teen training (which may
include some Level 3).
In subsequent discussion with Rev Kevin, the material making and timing of the training
towards the end of October has been finalised.
For Nairobi Diocese this will be a good start to have a working example in the diocese as a
beginning point for a clergy conference to advance DGS in other Archdeaconries.
Ongoing DGS progress in the West of Kenya.
Maseno West has made a good start with over 120 guides trained in Level 1, and further
training planned. Two dioceses including Nambale and Katakwa are soon to commence
training and two more are planning to get started.
The opening of the DGS training centre at St Crispin’s Cathedral.
There is now a DGS training centre here, where the Good Shepherd children’s ministry started in 2009.
The first training, in August was an international one with senior people who will help coordinate DGS development from Tanzania and Zambia.
There was a Holy Communion service during the training and the official opening of the centre by CEO Kistos and the blessing of the centre. With the demand both in the West of Kenya, and the likely demand from Uganda, the centre will be very busy.
DGS growth in Central and the Rift Valley regions of Kenya.
DGS has been in three Anglican dioceses in these regions for some time and is now starting
up in six more and the Army.
